‘3 to 6 percent of yield losses is sufficient to render PV projects financially nonviable’

Characteristic for PV installations is that they will underperform as a result of Potential Induced Degradation or PID. PID occurs on all photovoltaic panels, often without the owner of the installation being aware of it.

PID can occur within weeks or even days of commissioning. PID emerged in the last ten years with the development of higher system voltages and ungrounded systems. It generally occurs when the internal PV electrical circuit is biased negatively in relation to ground. The combination of voltage and humidity can cause sodium ions from the glass or cell surface to create current paths from internal PV electrical circuit to the frame and mounting system. This reduced module perforamnce as some of the module’s generated electrons are lost to these newly formed current paths.

Losses > 30%

According to the leading testing agency PV Evolution Labs (PVEL), PID can lead to efficiency losses of more than 30%. However, research from the same PVEL shows that losses of 3 to 6 percent are sufficient to make a solar panel project nonviable. Fortunately, there are solutions to cope with the PID phenomenon …

PIDbox

One of the measures that can be taken is the installation of a PIDbox. This device regenerates solar panels, as well with limited as with significant efficiency losses, in a time span of a few weeks. Meanwhile, the PIDbox extends the lifetime of solar panels. Next to its regenerative function, the PIDbox also prevents from efficiency losses in the future.

The PIDbox is unique in the sense that it is the only PID solution in the market that works independently of the inverter and therefore it will never cause harm or void warranty.

The patented PIDbox is installed between the solar panels and the inverter. At night, when the solar cells are not active, the PIDbox reverses the direction of the current and rejuvenates the degenerated cells.

Independent Thomas More Hogeschool (association KU Leuven) researchs shows that after the installation of a PIDbox, the efficiency of solar panels increases on average by 7,5%. The same research also concluded that the payback time of a PIDbox is almost always less than 3 years. Today the PIDbox is sold in about 40 countries with an installed capacity of more than  5,2 GWp.
