‘3 to 6 percent of yield losses is sufficient to render PV projects financially nonviable’

Characteristic for PV installations is that they will underperform as a result of Potential Induced Degradation or PID. PID occurs on all photovoltaic panels, often without the owner of the installation being aware of it.

PID can occur within weeks or even days of commissioning. PID emerged in the last ten years with the development of higher system voltages and ungrounded systems.It generally occurs when the internal PV electrical circuit is biased negatively in relation to ground. The combination of voltage and humidity can cause sodium ions from the glass or cell surface to create current paths from internal PV electrical circuit to the frame and mounting system. This reduced module perforamnce as some of the module’s generated electrons are lost to these newly formed current paths.

Losses > 30%

According to the leading testing agency PV Evolution Labs (PVEL), PID can lead to efficiency losses of more than 30%. One of the measures that can be taken is the installation of a PIDbox. This device regenerates solar panels, as well with limited as with significant efficiency losses, in a time span of a few weeks.
