What is the energy consumption level of the PIDbox?

The PIDbox of iLumen increases the efficiency of solar panels that are affected by Potential Induced Degradation and extends their lifetime. The PIDbox is an energy-saving device, but what is its energy consumption level?

The energy consumption level of the PIDbox is on average only 1% of the energy gains it causes.

DAY AND NIGHT

The PIDbox is installed between the solar panels and the inverter. At night, when the panels are not active, the device regenerates the PID affected solar cells.

The energy consumption level of the PIDbox is dependent on the amount of PID that is present in the solar panels. When PID is present in a large extent, the consumption level of the PIDbox is higher than with a low presence of PID. At night, the PIDbox will only regenerate to the extent that is required, which naturally has a positive effect on energy consumption.

At daytime, the operation of the PIDbox is limited to determining the amount of PID present in the solar panels.

NUMERICAL EXAMPLE

Research peformed by Thomas More Hogeschool shows that the installation of a PIDbox Mini results in an average efficiency increase of 7,45%.

Imagine a family with an annual electricity consumption of 3.500 kWh and a solar panel energy production (without PIDbox) of 3.000 kWh.

After installing the PIDbox Mini, the solar panels will produce 3.223,5 kWh (3.000 kWh X 1,0745)

The energy savings from the installation of the PIDbox Mini thus equals 223,5 kWh per year. The average consumption of the PIDbox Mini is limited to about 1,825 kWh per year or less than 1% of the energy gains.
